Modern and contemporary art

Italy is the birth place of renaissance, baroque and futurism art, however for several years architects and artists already claim that Italy is experiencing a a second renaissance. Come with us on the trail of the modern Michelangelos!

In Venice you can find Miuccia Pradas “Fondazione Prada” in a noble palace, while in Milan a four storey 24 carat gold leaf plated house indicating their position.

In Rome there are two new museums, both of which are unique worldwide for their uncomparible art exhibitions.

The national museum, called – MAXXI – weaves the cultural heritage of Rome with the future in a fascinating way.

The MACRO (Museo d’Arte Contemporanea Roma) a museum for contemporary art, opened in 2010 in the former Peroni brewery close to the Piazza Fiume.

The Biennale di Venice represents a quantum leap in the Italian culture landscape. The Frenchman Francois Pinault introduces himself in the Italian art tradition, he decides that Venice becomes the top location for class collection of contemporary art: he bought Palazzo Grassi in 2005 and a little later he took a 30 year lease on Punta della Dogana, which used to be the old customs station of the lagoons town. Since then Venice has continuiously enriched itself with new, important and exiting exhibitions of modern art.

Friends of artistry will also enjoy themselves in Cá Pesaro and in the Peggy Guggenheim Collection. CSAC Parma High-class art finds its place in a magnificent enviornment, in an abbey, which became famous because of the world famous novel The Charterhouse of Parma written by Standhal.

Other significant museums of modern art are:

  • Museion Bolzano
  • MART in Rovereto
  • Castello Rivoli in Turin

The collection “Collezione Maramotti” in the former factory of the MAX-Mara fashion company in Reggio Emilia: where about 200 sculptures and paintings are exposed in 43 rooms. A special highlight are also the sculpture parks where visitors can wander around and admire extraordinary art. A few examples:

  • Sculpture park Chianti – Tuscany
  • Rossini Art Park – Lombardy
  • Niki di Saint Phalle – Tuscany
  • Daniel Spoerri – Tuscany
  • Arte Sella – Trentino
  • Cà la Ghironda – near Bologna
  • Dozza – the village with the painted houses
